Education Policy
The federal budget for 2024-25 includes an estimated $126.4 billion over 2024–25 to 2027–28 in recurrent school funding nationally. In 2024, the federal government is providing $29.2 billion in recurrent funding for all schooling sectors. Despite this, Australia continues to rank lower than comparable high- and middle-income countries in achieving quality education outcomes. This must change.
OUR POLICIES
Restore sensibility to our school curriculum and agenda
One Nation Victoria will restore critical thinking in the classroom and reinstate the cornerstone of education with reading, writing, arithmetic, and discipline. There should be no room for western, white, gender, guilt shaming in any classroom. Rather, children should be taught the benefits of a merit-based, free-thinking society. We will proactively work with the Victorian Department of Education to restore the balance and modify the curriculum accordingly. One Nation Victoria will:
- reintroduce mandatory Australian history studies which support and champion our British settler history, Australian military campaigns, Australian patriotism, and pride, as well as a greater understanding of how a democratic western society can benefit each individual as a positive and effective way of living your life.
- School children will not be asked to apologise for a past that they were in no way responsible for. Rather, they will be taught to consider Australian history and critically analyse to make up their own minds.
Gender and sexuality ideology
One Nation Victoria will conduct a feasibility study into, and start rolling back the Safe Schools and Respectful Relationships agenda, placing the focus and emphasis on parental responsibility and control for biological gender advocacy, discussing gender identification and orientation in a way that works best for them without prejudice. We will ensure that Victorian school children under the age of 16 are not exposed to such radical gender ideology and thinking. One Nation Victoria will:
- legislate for the banning of Genders & amp; Sexualities Alliances, (or GSAs for short) in primary schools.
- ensure that Victorian school children under the age of 16 are not placed in situations that will unfairly influence their conceptions relating to sexual orientation and biological gender. We will,
- provide comprehensive education and support to parents and families to have such conversations within their own environment, thus strengthening the family unit and build trusting relationships.
One Nation supports public funding of both government and non-government schools; competition ultimately leads to better standards for all students. One Nation Victoria opposes four-day school weeks.
Parental responsibility and engagement
One Nation considers that parents are primarily responsible for their children’s education, and will encourage greater parental responsibility and engagement by:
- establishing school boards, elected by students’ parents, with parents comprising a minimum 50% of board membership; school boards will be accountable to the school community; and
- introducing a school voucher system to give parents real choices about where their children are educated.
Curriculum reform
One Nation strongly supports a back-to-basics approach with education, with a focus on reversing the decline in literacy and numeracy outcomes. We oppose students being indoctrinated with political views. We’ll improve the curriculum by:
- removing subjects outside those traditionally taught in schools, and re-emphasising subjects such as English, mathematics and sciences to improve students’ literacy and numeracy;
- ensuring the delivery of social sciences education is balanced and evidence-based; and
- stripping the curriculum of any ideological or politically-biased material.
Better education outcomes
One of the key principles rarely applied to education outcomes and student behaviour is accountability, and One Nation considers this has contributed significantly to the decline in learning outcomes. One Nation will emphasise accountability in the delivery of education by:
- ensuring NAPLAN results are used for what they were intended: identifying problems and gaps, and moving immediately to address them;
- making schools responsible for ensuring students achieve all the requirements of their year level before being permitted to move to the next grade;
- working with universities to ensure better standards are required of teaching graduates so they are fully equipped to deliver high quality education;
- developing teacher contracts which recognise and reward those whose students achieve high academic results; and
- empowering schools to enforce discipline in classrooms and on playgrounds – all schools will be required to develop protocols for dealing effectively with disruptive or misbehaving students, including processes which allow students to be suspended.
Tackling the skills shortage crisis across Victoria
One Nation Victoria recognises that our state is in the midst of a major skills shortage crisis when it comes to trades. There are simply not enough Victorians learning trades to meet current demand for such services including building, plumbing, carpentry and automotive.
According to the Housing Industry Association (HIA) March 2024 Trades Report, Australia’s housing construction industry remains in the grip of one of the worst shortages of tradespeople for at least the past twenty years despite a slowdown in new home construction. The most acute shortages are evident in bricklaying, ceramic tiling, plastering, carpentry and roofing.
This is no better in the automotive industry. Victorian Automotive Chamber of Commerce chief executive Geoff Gwilym said the industry was not attracting enough young workers. “Panel shops, general mechanics, dealerships, they all have problems with a skill shortage” he said. One Nation Victoria will:
- lobby our TAFEs to provide sign-on mentoring commitments to Victorians who enrol in trade apprenticeship courses and programs which means an immediate connection with potential employers.
- provide opportunities for private industry to mentor these students during their studies and build strong relationships for potential future employment.
One Nation will announce further information and associated policies relating to Victoria over the course of the election cycle.
